Global Autonomous Train Market Size, Share, and Trends Analysis Report, By Automation Grade (GoA 1, GoA 2, GoA 3, and GoA 4), By Application (Passenger and Freight), By Technology (CBTC, ERTMS, ATC, and PTC), By Train Type (Metro/Monorail, Light Rail and High-Speed Rail), Forecast (2022-2028)

The global autonomous train market is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 6.8% during the forecast period (2022-2028). Autonomous trains, which are also known as driverless trains, are operated automatically without any human intervention and are monitored from the control station. In case of any obstacle incurred in the route, a message is sent to the operational control center and to the attendant on the train, to stop the train. The increase in traffic congestion on the road network has given rise to the need for smart and frequent trains which is the driving factor for the growth of the global autonomous trains market.

The rise in demand for safe and efficient transport, and increase in allocation of budget for the development of railways are some other driving factors accelerating the growth of the market. Additionally, advantages such as reduction in pollution, accidents, and passenger capacity in trains, improvement in railway infrastructure, particularly in developing countries, and an increase in freight transport through trains are some factors encouraging the growth of the market. However, the rise in the possibility of hacking the system, and the high cost of train automation are restraining the growth of the market.

Some major players in the market include Hitachi Ltd., Alstom S.A., and Siemens AG, among others. The market players are contributing significantly to the growth of the market by the adoption of various strategies including mergers & acquisitions, geographical expansion, partnerships, new product launches, and collaborations, to stay competitive in the market.

Recent Developments

  • In October 2021, German Rail Corp. and Siemens Mobility developed the world’s first train that operates by itself in rail traffic. The train is controlled by digital technology and is fully automated. The driver remains on the train to supervise the journey with passengers on board.
  • In August 2021, Hitachi Rail Ltd., entered an agreement with the Thales to acquire the Ground Transportation System business of the Thales Group company. As a result of this agreement, Hitachi Rail is expected to drive growth by expanding the scale of its rail signaling systems business and further advancing its rail automation systems business globally.
  • In March 2021, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engineering Ltd. (MHI-ENG) and KEOLIS SA announced that they formed a consortium (the Consortium) and signed a 15-year contract to operate and maintain Dubai’s world-class driverless metro in Dubai and tram networks with the Roads & Transport Authority of Dubai (RTA).
